Queer Town Abbey Equal Rights Blog Hop

I’m taking part in the Queer Town Abbey Equal Rights Blog Hop this week. Check out the other posts, the prize list, and the rafflecopter giveaway.

The theme for this blog hop is “your first experience in the LGBT community.”

Mine is reading and writing related, and began about ten years ago when I was reading fanfic online and discovered slash, and yaoi (both online and in hardcopy manga). I loved reading m/m, and realised this was what I’d been missing in my reading for all these years. But my experience got even better when a friend sent me published books – I had no idea they were out there, and devoured what she sent.

It’s still not that easy to find m/m to read locally but the library has some now—although it’s not always easy to find them on the catalogue—and with the event of places of sites like Book Depository with free international postage, and ebooks I haven’t looked back. Now there’s so much to choose from that I can’t keep up, which makes me happy.

But my story doesn’t finish there. I was looking for a home for my first novel, and had tried a couple of mainstream local publishers with no luck. I’d been exchanging emails with a m/m author whose work I enjoyed, and she suggested submitting to Dreamspinner Press. The rest is history, and I’m happy to be able to contribute to a community which has made me feel so very welcome.

I now have six titles out with Dreamspinner Press, and the seventh (Winter Duet) being published in September/October.

Question time, with a simple yes/no answer. Have I ever read yaoi manga?

I love it! I did a lot of theater in high school and college, and my friends were my theater friends, as opposed to gay or straight. But when I discovered slash, I felt for the very first time as though I'd discovered adult romantic fiction written just for me. :-)

Thanks! That was pretty much how I felt too along with why didn't I know about this sooner.

Thanks, Anders and for the opportunity to take part. I really enjoyed it. Looking forward to summer when it finally gets here but we're a few months off it yet sadly. Still in the middle of cold and wet with snow on the hills.
