Welcome Garrett Leigh

A big welcome to fellow Dreamspinner author, Garrett Leigh. Garrett's sharing her thoughts on men in uniform and her new release Slide

Who doesn't like a man in uniform? Gah, I know I love 'em, but beneath the hunk-oh-factor, it's important to remember that these guys have really intense jobs. The good and the bad can be totally insane, and when it came to writing Slide, I wanted to really explore the emotional impact Pete's role as a Chicago paramedic had on his day to day life, and his relationships.

The first thing I noticed was it made him kinda cynical. His enthusiasm for life was dulled, like he'd seen so many horrible things he almost couldn't face the good. Like he thought it all too good to be true. Pete also worried a lot, with good reason sometimes, but at others his subtle fears were disproportionate and bled out into those around him––namely his lover, Ash, who had enough worries of his own.

I got a sense of isolation with Pete too. Because he wasn't out at work, he kept his distance from his colleagues. His only real friend was his partner, Mick, and long nights in the ambulance with only each other for company often became lonely.

But above all, in the end I felt that Pete's experiences working as a medic was what gave him the strength to see Ash through his darkest hour. You see, for all the tragic things he'd seen, the occasional miracle stayed with him too, and it was this faint flicker of hope that kept him strong when others may have fallen.

Men in uniform are a wonderful thing, but I really enjoyed this opportunity to dig a little deeper.

Slide (Roads #1)
Don’t look back. Don’t you ever look back…

Shy tattoo artist Ash has a troubled past. Years of neglect, drug abuse, and life on the streets have taken their toll, and sometimes it seems the deep, unspoken bond with his lover is the only balm for wounds he doesn’t quite understand.

Chicago paramedic Pete is warmth, love, and strength—things Ash never knew he could have, and never even knew he wanted until Pete showed him. But fate is a cruel, cruel mistress, and when nightmares collide with the present, their tentatively built world comes crashing down.

Traumatic events in Pete’s work life distance him from home, and he doesn’t realize until it’s too late that Ash has slipped away. Betrayal, secrets, and lies unfold, and when a devastating coincidence takes hold, Pete must fight with all he has to save the love of his life.
